On the occasion of the Armistice Day in the First World War on 11th November 1918, the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia organised a commemoration at the Serbian military cemeteries in Menzel Bourguiba and Bizerte. Ambassador Dijana Ivancic laid wreaths and paid tribute to the Serbian soldiers in the presence of the Director General and Director of Protocol of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad, Director General for International Cooperation of the Ministry of National Defense of the Republic of Tunisia, officials of Menzel Bourguiba and Bizerte, Ambassador of France and other members of the diplomatic and military corps. The laying of wreaths was followed by the intonation of the national anthems of Serbia and Tunisia.
In her speeches, Ambassador Ivancic highlighted the significant role of friendly Tunisia in the recovery of Serbian soldiers, who, from 9th January 1916, after the Albanian Golgotha, gradually came to Bizerte, where they were treated and prepared for the defense of the homeland. She emphasized that Serbia remembers the solidarity and humanity of the Tunisian people, as well as its allies and friends who lent a helping hand to it in the most difficult moments during the war. She pointed out the importance of preserving a culture of memory and the collective commitment of all countries in order to preserve international peace. She particularly emphasized that the memory of the sacrifices of the Great war urges us to be worthy of those who died for us so that we could live in peace and freedom, adding that each hero is the face of hope for which the entire youth accepted to sacrifice, the hope for peace in the world, for a world where friendship between peoples prevails over warlike passions and where human words are heard louder than weapons.
